Esther Perel Releases Season 2 of “Where Should We Begin” Podcast
Renowned couples therapist, Esther Perel, who is based in New York City, has released a free podcast series called Where Should We Begin in which she counsels real couples about their problems. The podcast has been highly reviewed in publications like The Atlantic. According to The Atlantic, Where Should We Begin is “the Rosetta stone for feelings.”
In season 2 episode 1 of the podcast, Perel works with parents of an adoptive daughter struggling with multiple mental health diagnoses, including PTSD and severe depression.
Over the course of the episode, the parents work through their own pain and confusion regarding how best to help their daughter. Perel points out family dynamics and patterns which may be contributing to their daughter’s suffering. For example, she points out that by not telling friends or family what is going on, the parents are mirroring their daughter’s behavior by isolating themselves from others.
In the episode, Perel shares her systemic view of working with families, in which “problems” in a family come from the relationship patterns between family members rather than just one person in the family being “the problem.” Her perspective is strength-based and empowering for the parents who talk to her on this episode.
